Herbology, or herbalism, is the use of plants and plant matter to promote health and to prevent, alleviate, or treat illness.

An herb is considered any plant or part of plant which is used for therapeutic value, though many herbal traditions also include ingredients from mineral or animal sources as herbal medicines.

Herbalism predates written history and has been the primary source of healing throughout human history. Only in the last 100 years since the rise of the pharmaceutical industry has plant medicine use declined. However, 75% of the global population still uses traditional healing methods.

There are many different traditional healing frameworks that include herbalism - Ayurveda, Siddhi, Native American, Chinese medicine, folk and western herbal traditions are all based on herbal science.

Homeopathy is a distinct holistic healing system that was created by Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843), a German chemist and physician, at the beginning of the 19th century.

He did extensive experimentation on many different substances from plants, minerals, and animals to determine their effects. He created a representation of what the substance achieves, called the materia medica. Since he began practice, the materia medica, over 2000 substances has been discovered.

Homeopathy is a system which is considered natural, safe, and gentle treatment of both acute illnesses and chronic conditions.  Homeopathy can help relieve symptoms, revitalize issues, and strengthen overall health.

It is safe to use with small children and furry friends without the side effects of traditional medications.

Ayurveda is a natural system of medicine originating in India. It comes from the Sanskrit words ayur (life) and veda (science or knowledge). Ayurveda translates to knowledge of life.

It is based on the idea that disease is the cause of imbalance or stress in a person’s consciousness. Another words, health and wellness depend on this unique balance between the mind, body, and spirit.

Ayurveda supports lifestyle interventions and therapies to improve balance of the body, mind, spirit and environment.

The goal is to promote good health.  It is a form of complementary and alternative medicine based on the ancient medical system of India.

One of the twelve most common alternative therapies utilized in the United States today is massage therapy. The usage of complementary and alternative therapies in conjunction with conventional methods continues to grow as patients choose treatment options, prevention, and holistic care based on heath literacy.

Massage therapy is the general practice of massage techniques on the muscles and other soft       tissues of the body to improve many aspects of health and wellness.

Massage therapy is an organized application of massage.

The practice goes back thousands of years and is one of the oldest documented modalities of therapy. Writings have been found in Ancient China, Japan, Egypt, and India with different ideas and techniques for massage therapy.

Meditation is another alternative therapy which has been steadily gaining popularity in the west since the 1960s. There are many different definitions and traditions of meditation.

Meditation is the process of calming the mind and relaxing the body by focusing on a particular object, phrase, or sensation.

Meditation is considered to be a type of mind-body complementary medicine.

Stress can make you anxious, tense, and worry.  Meditation is a simple way to lower stress wherever you are to help restore peace to your mind and body.

Mind and body practice is a large and diverse group of interventions, practices, and disciplines based on procedures or techniques taught to others by a trained practitioner like acupuncture, massage therapy, meditation, spinal manipulation, and yoga.

Meditation’s history includes increasing calmness, physical relaxation, improving psychological balance, coping with illness, and enhancement of overall health and well-being of the mind and body.

Naturopathy is one of the twelve most common alternative therapies in the United States.  It is based on the idea the body can heal itself through its natural healing ability.

Naturopathy was founded by Dr. Benedict Lust in Germany who came to the US in 1896 with the practice.

Naturopathy combines the idea that the body can heal itself with traditional medical treatment of diseases when they develop. It combines healing traditions with scientific advances and current research so the body can recognize natural healing capability and supports disease prevention.

The naturopathic physician (ND) uses traditional medicine therapies from all over the world to help patients heal and stay healthy through prevention.

Benedict Lust lived from 1872 to 1945.  He was known as the “Father of Naturopathy” for his nature cure with homeopathy, massage, spinal manipulation, and therapeutic electricity.
